RE: Outside Awning
I found this site after considerable searching a few weeks ago. http://www.shade-cloth-diy.com/awnings/awnings.shtml I have not made my awning, yet, but the basics are there for actually making the awning, including tips on what thread to use. You should click on that button and read the extra info ...

RE: Bumpkeys - are your doors really secure?
I have a woman's perspective on unlocked doors. If an intruder is intent on getting in, I want to hear the door breaking down so I have a little more time to react. I don't want anyone slipping in silently for a night-time ambush. 20 years as a single mom of three, and 18 years living 13 miles outsi...

RE: Did I $ave or Did The Contractor Save Himself?
I know this post is a month old; however, I have used the Lowe's heat/air unit. It was 500 in 2005 (220 wiring required). The AC was great, but I didn't know until winter arrived that the heat does not cycle on and off like the AC. The heat was either on or off and blew the selected level of heat. W...

RE: Getting ancient stains out of sink and bathtub????
Super Clean in automotive section of Walmart. Big purple bottle of cleaner-degreaser, about $6. Doesn't have terrible odor of some products. Still takes elbow grease and a scotchbrite pad, but removed 8-year old rust stains from our tub. I used full strength. Post is January 25 in decorating forum. ...

Sylvia - I was curious, do you think Harris County is penalized because of its sudden increase in crime? A news report said that violent crime in Houston increased almost 25% after Hurricane Katrina and continues to persist. They attributed the increase to relocation of New Orleans' residents to Hou...

RE: Concrete Closets Under Manufactured Homes Could Save Liv
After Hurricane Rita, residents of Houston were offered 1/2 the cost of the following hurricane/tornado shelter. I can't find the details but I think I remember the shelter costing about $5,000 with $2500 grant, leaving homeowners to pay the other $2500. At the time of the report, very few residents...

RE: Master Bath Tub
April, our home is a 1999 double-wide with a garden tub and the 2'x4' shower. I hated the tub and the mirrors but I also disliked the shower and how cheaply made it was. I convinced hubby to remove the shower and use the space for storage and another sink for him to shave in. We consider our home pe...

RE: Furnace Alcove
Thanks Robert: Actually your reference to a fire-rated door did make me question the advisability of the manufacturer placing a gas heating unit at a right angle to and literally inches from the washing machine, since I pile the clothes up in front of the washing machine (and therefore in front of t...

I guess I better clairify. The room as stated houses the washer/dryer/HVAC and is not overly large. The door is not over the heating unit. It is installed as the entrance door to the room. The door we installed is fully louvered top to bottom, with air return space under the door. I don't believe it...

I love Ikea's kitchen cabinets. They are really stylish, come in a multitude of door styles, colors, finishes, and price-range. They also carry a huge array of extras, like pull out spice racks, pantry with pullouts, deep pot drawers, dividers, islands. Anything you can think of, they've got it. I'v...

RE: Furnace Alcove
Our furnace unit was open also. It is in an alcove that contains our washer/dryer and electric panel. The whole area was wide open to the kitchen - no door. My husband and I installed a louvered door to allow unimpeded air return to the heat system. Also the door is plastic, so the humidity from the...
