RE: Vinyl tile on top of vinyl tile
depending on the age of the vinyl floor, it may be so much easier to remove than you are thinking. thin grades cut fairly easily with a new blade in the utility knife. then take a shot at seeing if it will just peel up by hand. If it is really glued well, a heat gun will often loosen the adhesive. s...

odd siae water heater door
early research makes it look like I may need to build my own exterior replacement water heater door. it is about 28 wide by about 36 inches high, with hinges on top. I bought some pressure treated wood slats (6 inches by about 1/2 inch thick by 36 inches long) that I let sit to get the moisture bala...

RE: Deck Steps
not super pretty, but I have nailed shingles onto the steps, they lasted a while, and gave me a lot better traction. being black, when the sunlight shines on them, the snow melted pretty fast.
plus, if they wear out, fairly easy to replace....

and you may get unexpected help! a neighbor stopped by the MH I am rehabbing, and I showed him the fireplace hearth I am trying to make "non combustible", by removing the wood trim at the bottom of the fireplace/top of the raised hearth that actually was touching the metal front of the fir...

RE: Electric fireplace question...........
If you are not in a hurry, I have seen that the home improvement stores tend to have huge discounts (50 to 75% off) on electric fireplaces at end of winter into spring. Actually, they may go on sale as soon as Christmas is over.

installing tile near a fireplace
Ok, I got some of the safety issues answered... now for the tiling question.. Lowes had an article on installing tile on a fireplace hearth that suggested putting down concrete board over the plywood, and attaching the tile to that. does anyone with tiling experience think that is necessary? if so, ...

RE: Paint and Waterlines
Hi Sue, I have learned to do plumbing repairs with pex this year, after I saw it done it a few times, and with a little coaching. It is pretty forgiving stuff. that said, if your brother can plan out the repair with someone who has already redone a MH, it may be a lot easier. There are manifolds ava...

wood trim on a fireplace
Hi everyone! the wood fire place, that probably is a factory install in my 1983 Redman new moon, has a wood platform built in front of it. I think the platform may have been added by a previous owner. the wood is unpainted, and worries me. there is a 2X4 that comes right up to the bottom edge of the...

there is also a gasket between the tank top and the bottom, if you are going to have the screws off, you may want to do that ring also at the same time....

RE: Best tool for cuts close to wall?
not low cost, but the tool I cannot live without is a Fein Multimaster oscillating tool. It will cut close to the wall, where the circular saw could not reach. It can be used to make the corners of the hole square, and can shave off left over particle board if it was glued to the joist. It also can ...

RE: FLOORED !!!
Would the vinyl floor be that hard to remove? it may not be glued down. at least, the one I took up was not glued, and all I had to do was cut it at the base of the walls. the thing is, if you pull the vinyl up, you can see if there is any hidden damage to the subflooring that is going to mess up th...

RE: Losing the battle with the floors here!
Floors... Mark's book is a great reference for the how to do it instructions. I have been redoing floors until I could scream, but I can tell you this, once you have the leaks done, then do the floor, it is such a difference, you may be like me, and feel a lot less defeated. no more spongy walking s...

RE: New Gutters Under The Old Ones!?
Hi! I'll let wiser folks comment on replacement gutter choices. There is probably an ideal size of small gutters, or whether seamless gutters are worth the price. I had failed drip channels on all 3 MHs I am rehabbing, and I have had to try several different things to get all the water to stop flowi...

RE: Hanging Stuff on Wall (Wallboard)
would a horizontal board for a rail, painted white, with a fancier trim board of top of it, (such as the home improvement stores sell for chair railing or picture frames) work if it were attached across a wider area, such as 3 or 4 studs? the bottom of the heavy picture or TV would rest on it, with ...
