Am I wrong? Leave existing roof and do 'roof over'?
I have older mobile home in the process of renovating. Have 'contractor' who is making the home like a house- lots of concrete/brick/new floor joists, etc. It's time for the roof- I have a dome..... contractor recommends an 'a' frame with a peak/ridge line, etc- not too much of a pitch but enough to...

Keeping old siding- let the sunshine in?
I've decided to keep the 'look' and keep my siding the way it is. This is from the '60s, metal pieces placed together- some screws. When inside the home and gutted to the studs, even remove insulation..... I can see the siding from the inside and there are lots of spots where sunshine comes in. I'd ...

Replace floor joists - would you?
Have an 11x60 from the '60s- was advised to tear out ALL the frame for the floor because the joists run parallel with the ibeams. Says that they don't build them like that anymore and now they build them with the joists running perpendicular to the ibeams. Currently the joists run the length of the ...

Re: Ceiling options
Idea- not sure how this would work.... The big box home improvment stores have those 4x8 panels of hard/stiff insulation. I've seen them pink, white, black, and silver-chrome looking. If all else fails and I just can't find a lightweight ceiling panel..... would this work? For the seams, I'd coffer ...

Ceiling options
Posted 'wall options' and got sheetrock, 1/8. Anyone else? I'd rather have those original panels- very lightweight...but can't find where to buy them. Now I'm looking at ceilings- I would rather opt for the ultra/air/lightweight panels that originally came with home- so lightweight. But don't know w...

Wall options?
Gutted mobile home to studs. Have read sheetrock is too heavy. I have a 1960s and worry about weight. When I took up the OSB and put down 3/4 plywood....I was really worried and really don't want to add MORE weight. What are options for walls? Lowes and Home Depot are the local stores that deliver. ...

Under/inside roof/ceiling - redo vapor barrier?
I've removed the celing, all insulation (what was left of it since the 60s), all wiring, etc. Am left with rafters and a silver metal underside of roof. The roof isn't peak, nor flat....kinda a dome, slight curve. There are no openings at all - all venting is done through the exterior walls. What is...

Windows
I've read posts where many of you have used regular windows with no problem. A few of you have mentioned as long as you are not using large picture windows..... Why is that? I've gutted (everything to the exterior studs- left the subfloor and siding but have removed ALL electrical/plumbing, etc) and...

Epic Fail - need advice - metal roof - leak at screw
Did the metal roof about 4 to 5 years ago. It has withstood the test of time so far and even a tornado directly over the home. However- I did something wrong- the neoprene screws- I think I did them too tight, or not tight enough as I've noticed they (some of them) are starting to leak. I've taken d...

Re: faux bathroom?
I'd love to see the photos as well! This is the type of product I'm looking for... 4'x8' panels that I can cut and fit to my design. Question- what do you use for the seams? Not a fan of caulk- not one bit. That's why I wanted to use tile and grout. My tiles in the kitchen - they are vinyl squares b...

faux bathroom?
Want a tiled bathroom- walk in shower with pebble floor. HEAVY! There is no way my home will withstand the weight of all the tile and grout. What are my options? Surely there is a product that 'looks' like rock/pebble/tile that isn't. Perhaps a wall surround that isn't flat white but made to look li...

Re: How much insulation in the roof?
I was wondering the same thing! How in the world can you blow in insulation? Unless I want to rip down my ceilings...I can't access my 'under' roof. But when I put on a new metal roof- I put down insulation panels...the 8'x4' ones. Not much R factor but it's some. I'd love to find a way to insulate ...

Re: Contractor "down payment" - Labor only
Don't pay a down payment for work not completed. Here are some things I found... Contractors do not have to wait for the entire job to end before being paid. A "schedule of progress payments" should be included as part of the contract to insure that the contractor - while fronting the mate...
