Re: Skylights
I've seen a few a typical newer homes (not mobile homes though) do skylights within the roof itself...really contemporary. These are within the metal roof and they use a clear roof instead of the colored (can't even see it from the outside- so no one knows they have a skylight- unless you are inside...

Re: Shingles over Shingles?
Just check on the weight...especially if you live somewhere it can snow (roofs are collapsing this winter) as the weight will be really heavy.
I went with the corrugated metal roof- doing it myself. And can be done over a period of time.

Windows- replacement/storm windows?
This Old House did some articles that suggest that good storm windows can be just as good or better than replacement windows. Anyone have any opinion? I'd like to leave my windows as I've already cased my windows on the interior and would just love to put up storm on the exterior to give energy effi...

Re: Abandoning ship! Water off?
It was going to be in the single digits so I broke and a day before payday-
I drained the toilet tanks but not bowls and cut off the water to the toilets
turned on the cold water to all faucets to just more than drip...to small stream
All was well when I returned home

Re: Abandoning ship! Water off?
Greg, thank you. I was wondering about the septic system- but since 1967- thru the blizzard of '88, and the Artic Blast of 2010....we've never had a problem. But I think my drains don't go thru the septic...I know, I know the violations- but we are in the middle of the county surrounded by farm land...

Abandoning ship! Water off?
NC is under a winter advisory, again but this time since it will be only 5 degrees at night soon...we are going to abandon ship. We have no heating system in place (still haven't found the type I want-but more on that later this spring) We've been using those oil filled radiator electric heaters and...

Re: Squatters....the cute, squeaky kind.
BarbP, that is so funny. I feel your pain. My cat cratches at the wall- and that's the problem, they are in the wall and can't get into the home. I guess they climb up into the insulation and make a warm bed...but how to keep them from coming in? I was told they can do major damage...like chewing th...

Squatters....the cute, squeaky kind.
It's that time of year and the mice are coming in. I live in a wooded area in NC and field mice are bad and they are finding my home. How do I keep them out? They are not getting 'in'....I've sealed up the walls w/ caulk, sealants, etc...when I painted, baseboards/moldings....but I hear them inside ...

Re: Spray entire home w/ foam spray insulation
Thanks for the advice. The blow in wouldn't work out well due to the voids.... it could catch on wiring or anything and I'd think it was full when it really wouldn't be. I'd like to 'see' I'm insulated. Yes, it's the kind that's professionally sprayed on with a wand...wouldn't even consider doing th...

Spray entire home w/ foam spray insulation
I've only the living room and bathroom left in my renovation- I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I forgot to insulate! I didn't insulate the bedrooms, 1 bathroom, the hallway! I did these in the spring/summer and didn't even think about it. And w/ all the moldings/tin ceiling...I don't wa...

Re: Laundry stacked in corner- home vibrates
The home has always been leveled, but I did have it checked. When I put down the new subfloor, it too was checked to be level (and of course it was), and when the laundry center was put it, it too was leveled. I'll google 'perimeter blocking' and see what that means. The laundry center/closet is at ...

Laundry stacked in corner- home vibrates
New flooring- 3/4 inch plywood, ensured all joists were in good shape. Leveled. Kenmore Laundry Center comes in, stacked unit, and the home vibrates. Crown moldings and all are starting to crack at seams. I put a piece of 3/4 inch plywood on top of the floor for extra support...but it still vibrates...

RE: HVAC options-there has to be a better way
Thanks for the tip. I'd rather avoid calling someone. My policy is not to go to a salesperson for information....their job is to make a sale. I like to do research in advance. That's why I posted it here. My aunt has this Monitor heater...sits in her living room. So by seeing this I know there are a...

RE: faux tin ceiling in mobile
I'm doing this in my hallway and maybe in my living room between the beams.
Lowes/HomeDepot sell the faux tin that is really lightweight and cutable w/o injury.
I start the project this weekend.
