We have a digital t-stat and sometime today the battery died. Noticed the house getting hot and hot air blowing from the vents. Turned unit off at t-stat, replaced batteries and waited 1/2 hour for unit to cool down. Turned back on, blower works, compressor kicked on and air started to cool. Then outside unit started to make a terrible noise. (not really a grind and not really a whine) Turned unit off and waited a few minutes. Turned back on and the same thing happened again. Please tell me we didn't burn up the bearrings. Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Hard to say without being there, need to pinpoint exactly where noise is coming from first.
Thanks,
Robert

Went outside and looked in the light of day. Compressor is kicking on and the lines start to cirulate the refridgerant but the noise is happening when the fan is supposed to kick on. The fan is not coming on outside at all. Going to check the contacts after work today. Are there any switches and relays that I can and should rule out before assuming my fan has died?
Hi,
The contactor, fan run capacitor both can cause that. For run cap, spin/push fan blades and see if fan motor starts and runs ok for the cycle.
Thanks,
Robert

Thanks so much for your help. It was the capacitor. You saved us a bunch. We were ready to buy a new fan motor to the tune of $170.00. The capacitor cost us $10.00. You guys ROCK!
