Hi- We have an old 1975 Four Seasons home. The kitchen and bathroom counters have a rubber or vinyl seal between the wall and countertop. We would like to add backsplashes, but the seal prevents the tile from laying flat against the wall Has anyone removed this type of seal? Also, my kitchen sink sits tight against this seal, which does not allow much room for grouting with seal in place. I have ordered a cove tile to see if it might cover the seal, but I would rather just remove the old seal. Any ideas? We cannot afford to buy new countertops.

Thank you in advance - Claire Marie

If it is what I am thinking of, it is likely stapled to the back of the counter top. Either remove the counter top to take it off, or use a utility knife to slice it away from the top.

You are correct, the seal is usually a vinyl/rubber flap stapled to the edge of the counter top. You would better off cutting it with a utility knife since you would have to remove the counter top to get to the staples.

You could seal it with a bead of Silicone before adding the back splash.
