Ceiling exhaust fan

Hi in one of my spare bedrooms there an exhaust fan of some sort someone told me its to vent the attic since my ac vent are on the ceiling it pulls the heat out the attic so that the ac works better is this true

That is a possibility. It may also be tied into the heating system as a power vent.
When does it run?

Theres a switch right next to the light switch in the room so you turn it on whenever its broke now but just wondering if i should fix it

That does almost sound like some type of vent fan. I guess depending on your weather conditions it may be worth repairing. Perhaps someone that lives in your area will add to this. Here in NY fans of that type are not too common.
