This is my very ugly bathtub drain which leaks. It's not a bad leak but drips. Obviously, someone has tried to fix this before by applying some sort of sealer. Therefore, any attempt by me to tear this apart and install a new drain will result in many bad words and I would probably not be successful in getting it apart anyway. So I will not attempt it. However, can someone suggest something I can smear on this thing to make it stop leaking. As I mentioned, replacement is NOT an option here. Thanks for your help.

I'm not a plumber but I ran into a similar problem. I had a trap that leaked no matter how tight I made it ( I couldn't over tighten it or it would crack). So I took it off, cleaned off the threads (the connectors) (I think I just used fingernail polish remover?) then put plumbers teflon paste over the threads. When I screwed it back together it didn't drip anymore. That stuff comes in a small tube similar to toothbaste. There are many varieties and I'm sure others will have ideas too.

My uncle suggested roofing tar. I suppose that would work but instead, I got a tube of silicone sealer which might be the same thing you suggested scottman, since it came in a tube like toothpaste. I have sealed the drain inside the tub and then underneath so we'll see what happens.
