I've been looking at KarnDean's Loose Lay vinyl.
KarnDean's own instructions say:
"All Chipboard / MDF / Weyrock
Overlay with a 6mm flooring grade plywood fixed at maximum
150mm centers. Plywood joints can be smoothed over using skim
coat or alternatively a full coat of a fibre reinforced smoothing
compound."
I pulled the carpet in a bedroom/closet. We have some kind of chipboard made by Hambro Forest Products, Crescent City CA. No sign of moisture damage, but it's certainly not as strong as plywood. There's sag when under load.
Anyone try Loose Lay without adding another subfloor? I know the product is resilient but wonder if that's going too far.

Any roughness, imperfections. etc in the subfloor will telegraph through the vinyl.
That's why they specify the subfloor.

Agree with 1987Commodore, Even if the plywood has knots in it they will show thru after a while. I always use Luan Plywood under all types of vinyl products and fill the seems flush. It's only 5/32 thick so it does not raise the floor much. Also make sure the vinyl you use is installed the way that vinyl is suppose to be anchored. Some are perimeter bond only.
