Has anyone seen the exterior done like this? it's weird.

We tore off all the aluminum siding off of our 1976 ambassador yesterday

we discovered that the exterior sheathing comes down from the ceiling, then there is a space of about a foot (you can see the interior insulation through this space) then the sheathing continues down to the bottom.

This happens all the way around. I guess it makes sense if you want to to use 4' sheets and not do any cutting.

Did the manufacturers cheap out or is this normal? has anyone else ever seen this before?

That is pretty common in the older vertical aluminum siding homes.
